In an age full of great French writers like Honore Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Emile Zola, and others, Victor-Marie Hugo (1802 –1885) may have been the most renowned in his time. Hugo was a poet, playwright, novelist, artist, and human rights activist at the height of the Romantic movement in France.
Hugo initially courted fame through his poetry, but now his novels and other lifetime achievements are best known. In particular, Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are read the world over.

This is a difficult book to rate as its appeal is limited. It is not for casual reading. It is an interesting example of history from a different viewpoint than usually found in textbooks. Victor Hugo demonstrates how to cut an egotistical dictator down to size with carefully crafted words and examples. The nephew of the more famous first Napoleon (the Great), emperor of France, was a Hitler like politician who took advantage of popularity to impose his will and desires on the French people, who blindly followed where he led. At the cost of personal exile, Hugo wrote this book attempting to waken fellow citizens to the danger they faced. Compared to modern tirades against political opponents, his words seem quaint and dated, but they were devastating. It made me admire Hugo for his courage and clear insight, and wish we had more political leaders like him today. The title of the book adequately summarizes its contents.Product details

Napoleon the Little Victor Hugo 9781522781523 Books Reviews
This book is a must read if you're even slightly interested in Napoleon or the Napoleonic era. The "real" Napoleon, that is. Important thing to note before you pick this book up Hugo is not comparing Napoleon I and II, instead it's between I and III. Napoleon II only reigned in title, and for such as insignificant time that it's not even worth mentioning (though on a personal level, it's a tremendously tragic life and one that should get more exposure...) but just keep that in mind. The writing is very clear and not academic. It's more of a manifesto than an academic report of sorts. It was clearly written for the people!
I learned a lot about Napoleon between the rants of how bad he was.
The little insights about the french Constitution, this explains a lot about the feelings on both sides in his later books.
This would be important for History majors as he is documenting history, hoping that Napoleon would be impeached some day.
It was a good book but is was difficult to read
for its
I was never interested in history or stories written about this type of thing before. Decided to give it a go and found myself very interested in what had happened to the French people. Very powerfully written and very enlightening of the sheer audacity of the man.
Thisbook should be required reading for civil servants as it demonstrates french dicotomy clearly. Demonstratiung to so called french diplomatic approach visible to this day
Napoleon was born at an ideal time to become the man of his times. He was quick to regonise the social unrest in France. He was also quick to take advantage of it. His records speaks for its self. He was a genus of military and of power. Oddly, he was notgreatly interested in wealth. He gained his position thru wars. He loved to fight. It became his downfall.
